With our flexible face-to-face training calendar, you can select any classroom course and have it delivered at a venue of your choice, offering you unparalleled convenience and exceptional value.

Course Overview

This professional training course equips participants working on construction, industrial, and high-risk sites with the essential knowledge and skills to identify, control, and manage hazardous work activities. Participants will learn to recognize common and site‑specific hazards (like working at height, confined space, hot work), apply appropriate control measures, and implement safe systems of work. The course also covers permit-to-work systems, job safety analysis, emergency response, and proactive safety program initiatives.

Course Duration

5 Days

Target Audience

  • Construction supervisors and site managers
  • Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) Officers in construction, industrial, petrochemical, and fabrication sites
  • Project / Operations Managers and Engineers
  • Field inspection and commissioning teams
  • Support and technical staff (procurement, engineering, controls, quality) working on site

Personal Impact

  • Develop strong awareness of common and complex construction site hazards.
  • Gain practical skills in applying control measures focused on real world site conditions.
  • Build competence in conducting risk based job safety analyses and permit to work systems.
  • Strengthen your leadership and influencing ability in promoting site safety culture.

Organizational Impact

  • Reduce incidents and near misses through systematic hazard control and safe work systems.
  • Improve compliance with safety regulations and internal standards on hazardous work.
  • Enhance proactive safety behavior through structured safety programs and continuous engagement.
  • Equip site teams with robust response mechanisms and a culture of shared responsibility for safety.
Course Level: Intermediate

Course Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify and analyze major hazardous work activities on site, including their risks.
  • Design and apply effective controls and safeguards suited to different work activities.
  • Establish and manage safe systems of work (permit to work, job safety analysis, inspections).
  • Build and sustain safety program initiatives such as observations, toolbox talks, and leadership walkabouts.
  • Develop emergency response strategies relevant to high hazard work environments.

Course Outline

Module 1: Hazard Awareness & Risk Fundamentals

  • Introduction to site specific hazards and risk concepts
  • Unsafe acts vs unsafe conditions
  • Major “Top 10” hazard categories on industrial construction sites (falls, hot work, etc.)
  • The role of site induction and continuous hazard awareness
  • Exercise: Participants conduct a risk walk (real or simulated) to identify and categorize typical site hazards.

Module 2: Control of Height, Hot Work & Lifting Hazards

  • Working at height: fall protection, anchorage, scaffolding
  • Hot work: permits, fire prevention, and isolation
  • Rigging and lifting: load dynamics, slings, safe lifting practices
  • Hand and power tools: risks and controls
  • Case Study: Analyze a real world or case based incident involving a fall or hot work; identify control failures and recommend improvements.

Module 3: Confined Spaces, Mobile Equipment & Energy Isolation

  • Confined space entry: risk assessment, atmosphere testing, rescue plans
  • Managing mobile equipment: traffic, maintenance, operator safety
  • Nitrogen work, pressure testing, and high-pressure risks
  • Lock out / tag out (energy isolation) systems
  • Group Project: Develop a confined space entry plan or energy isolation strategy for a hypothetical but realistic site scenario.

Module 4: Safe Systems of Work (Control of Work)

  • Job Safety Analysis (JSA) / Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) techniques
  • Permit to Work systems: types, roles, and documentation
  • Inspections, housekeeping, and housekeeping standards
  • Emergency response and rescue planning for hazardous tasks
  • Exercise: Write a permit to work matrix for a selection of hazardous tasks (e.g., hot work, lifting, confined space) in your work context.

Module 5: Building a Safety Program & Engagement

  • Observations, interventions, and frequent feedback loops
  • Hazard communication: signage, tool‑box talks, and training
  • Management walkabouts and leadership involvement
  • Safety campaigns, behavior based safety, and continuous improvement
  • Capstone Project: Develop a tailored “Site Safety Program Plan” for your organization or project, outlining hazard communication, behavioral interventions, inspections, and emergency response.
