Course Overview

This course provides in-depth training on the safe, compliant, and efficient storage and transportation of pharmaceutical products. In today’s increasingly complex pharmaceutical supply chain, maintaining product quality requires strict adherence to Good Storage Practice (GSP) and Good Distribution Practice (GDP), risk management, and the use of modern technology. Participants will learn how to design, validate, monitor, and manage pharmaceutical logistics to minimize risk and ensure product integrity from the warehouse to the patient.

Course Duration

5 Days

Target Audience

  • Pharmacists, Quality Assurance / Quality Control Staff
  • Logistics and Supply Chain Managers in Pharma
  • Warehouse / Distribution Centre Managers
  • Regulatory, Compliance, and Warehouse Operations Teams
  • Public Health Officials and NGO Supply Chain Officers

Personal Impact

  • Gain confidence in implementing compliant storage and distribution practices for pharmaceuticals.
  • Develop skills to assess and mitigate risks in pharmaceutical transport and warehousing.
  • Learn to apply modern technologies for real time tracking and control of pharmaceutical conditions.
  • Build leadership capacity to ensure quality systems are maintained in pharmaceutical logistics.

Organizational Impact

  • Enhance supply chain reliability and product integrity through GDP and GSP compliant operations.
  • Reduce losses, recalls, and quality deviations caused by temperature excursions or poor handling.
  • Improve traceability and accountability via digital monitoring and robust data recording.
  • Strengthen regulatory readiness and sustainability in pharmaceutical storage and transport.
Course Level: Foundation

Course Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand and apply Good Storage Practice (GSP) and Good Distribution Practice (GDP) requirements for pharmaceuticals.
  • Design and manage temperature control systems for pharmaceutical storage and transport.
  • Implement quality management systems, risk assessment, and mitigation strategies for storage and distribution.
  • Use monitoring technologies (e.g., IoT, data loggers) to maintain real time visibility and control over storage and transit conditions.
  • Stay compliant with contemporary regulatory standards and prepare for emerging trends in pharmaceutical logistics.

Course Outline

Module 1: Pharmaceutical Storage Fundamentals and Regulatory Framework

  • Principles of Good Storage Practice (GSP) and Good Distribution Practice (GDP)
  • Regulatory requirements: national, regional, and global standards
  • Risk based quality management in storage and transport
  • Roles and responsibilities in maintaining pharmaceutical quality
  • Exercise: Map your own organization’s storage and distribution process, identify gaps and noncompliance risks, and propose actions.

Module 2: Temperature Control & Storage System Design

  • Types of storage (ambient, refrigerated, cold, frozen)
  • Designing temperature controlled warehouses, including HVAC, insulation, and environmental control
  • Calibration and qualification of storage equipment
  • Monitoring and documenting conditions: sensors, data loggers, alarms
  • Case Study: Analyze a real world or hypothetical pharma warehouse; identify design weaknesses and recommend improvements.

Module 3: Transport & Distribution of Pharmaceuticals

  • Challenges in pharmaceutical transport: temperature excursions, handling, packaging
  • Packaging solutions: insulated containers, passive materials, active cooling
  • Vehicle qualification and validation
  • Risk management for transport: contingency planning, route risk, transport validation
  • Group Project: Design a transport and packaging plan for a pharmaceutical shipment, including risk mitigation measures.

Module 4: Monitoring, Quality Assurance & Technology

  • Real‑time monitoring: IoT sensors, GPS, data loggers for temperature, humidity Data management: recording, analysis, alerting, and interventions
  • Quality assurance in storage and transport: audits, inspections, deviation management
  • Emerging technology: blockchain for traceability, predictive analytics for risk
  • Exercise: Draft a monitoring plan for a storage transport system, specifying devices, data flows, and alert thresholds.

Module 5: Risk Management, Compliance & Emerging Trends

  • Risk assessment tools for storage and distribution
  • Documented procedures: SOPs, incident handling, corrective actions
  • Regulatory updates and compliance: Current GDP, new requirements
  • Future trends: sustainability, green logistics, zero trust architecture in pharma supply chain
  • Capstone Project: Develop an integrated plan for your organization’s pharmaceutical storage transport system that addresses risk, compliance, and technology adoption.
